Well…I’m a mother, a wife, a sister, an aunt, a daughter, a friend, a poet, an image activist (thank you Michaela Angela Davis), a teacher (in my own right), a motivational speaker and a lover of children. That’s it, no bells and whistles. I’m just a woman, who loves our babies, and works continuously to encourage their excellence.
My background is pretty grassroots. I graduated cum laude with a degree in finance from Alabama A&M University (The Hill). I didn’t realize, however, that my life’s passion would be to work with youth until I began volunteering at a Girls Inc. facility located in Birmingham, AL. What began as a short term community service project with a few friends catapulted into a 4 year journey with the organization; allowing me to promote self- esteem and self-determination through a cultural heritage course that I designed, simply entitled Afrocentric. From there, it was no turning back. I had officially fallen in love with motivating our children; and I have remained as such for well over 15 years. I taught a sexual awareness class to both middle and high school students. I coordinated and facilitated several Media Manipulation workshops for various organizations, focusing on the positive and negative effects of hip hop on youth. I’ve been a character education coordinator, where I traveled to various school systems and implemented character education curriculum; while conjointly working with young women at a girl’s detention center. I’ve also worked with youth at local alternative schools.
Have You Thanked an Inventor Today? is my first children’s book and I am super excited about it! It gives me an opportunity to continue to encourage and motivate our children to adopt habits of excellence and success. So stick with me on this journey. Where are we headed, hey, I don’t know. But I heard once before that if you shoot for the moon, you’ll at least land amongst the stars, and right now, I’m feeling quite celestial!
